Manservant known as ‘Bellman’ is a hired servant, but is considered to be part of the family anyway. After the accident that killed his parents, Sean and his young twin brothers were transferred into the care of their grandparents.

Life History: When he was younger, Sean displayed a higher intelligence than his peers, though within the normal range of intelligence for children his age. He excelled in most areas, and showed a keen aptitude for subjects only glanced over in high school classes. His grades were excellent, as were his relationships with his peers. In middle school and his high school freshman year, he was a member of the student council and on the soccer team (though he didn’t play very often, he was dedicated and was described by his coach as a ‘team player’). He was genuinely sweet, helpful, and wanted to interact with people as much as possible. He enjoyed reading, but enjoyed tutoring his peers in their weaker subjects more. He had many friends, and seemed to be the center of his group.
His interactions with his family members were much the same. He was a dedicated son, and helped his parents with his twin brothers whenever the need arose. The family took outings together, and even though Sean’s father worked a great deal, he always made the effort to be a part of his son’s life. For a thirteen year old, he was described as being surprisingly selfless.
When he was thirteen, it was noted that Sean’s personality seemed to shift a little. He was less willing to interact, and would confine himself to hidden corners of his school library. His parents noted that Sean was moody and disinterested in family activities and being with his friends. They concluded that Sean was simply at a time in his life where he was experiencing the changes of puberty, and a certain amount of moodiness or aggression was necessary for a boy his age.
Sean took a sudden disinterest in school and his grades began to slip. His teachers also reported that Sean’s attitude was becoming a serious issue in the classroom. Normally quiet and studious, Sean began challenging his teachers and citing his ideas with articles that did not exist. At the time, it was assumed that his entry into his pubescent years was to blame for his sudden challenging of authority, as well as his shift in social behavioral patterns. He refused to talk to his parents or Bellman about the issue, which was enough to encourage Sean’s parents to send him to a family counselor. Coming back from one of their sessions, Sean and his parents were involved in a high-speed traffic accident that killed both his mother and father.
After he was discharged from the hospital, he came to live with his mother’s parents along with his two twin brothers and Bellman.

Medical History: Sean suffered a severe injury in the auto accident to the base of his spine. He was admitted to Lawrence Hospital Center (Bronxville, NY) where he contracted Horner’s syndrome as a result of the trauma and developed a perfect heterochromia in his right eye due to the disease. Fortunately after testing, it was determined that the severity of the disease was mild.
While in the hospital, Bellman and Sean’s grandparents noticed that Sean seemed more disoriented and his thought processes didn’t always match up. Doctor J. Bixbite examined Sean again for any sign of brain lesions that could lead to severe disorientation or loss of cognitive mastery, but found nothing. In the end, Sean was discharged and the family assumed that Sean was in emotional turmoil.
After he returned home, Bellman noticed that after every followup appointment Sean had with his doctor, Sean would shut himself in his room and hold a conversation with no one. Sean grew more and more agitated with every doctor visit, soon refusing to come out of his room at all. Communication was nearly impossible on a long-term basis—Sean would continue to jump from topic to topic, but still retained his ability to form coherent sentences.
Two weeks after he was released, Bellman and Sean’s grandparents began to worry that Sean’s condition wasn’t improving. He isolated himself and would mutter to himself while reading and furiously making notes about human psychology, science, and folk and fairy tales. He insisted the three were connected, but could never make a logical case for why. They sent him to see a grief counselor. The counselor reported back that Sean needed to see a psychologist because he was displaying signs of psychosis that were clearly not caused by head trauma. While seeing Dr. F. Amandi (Practice in CT), Sean would become very upset and agitated when Amandi wouldn’t offer ‘Artemis’ a seat or talk to him. Sean never became violent, but Amandi still deemed him a danger to himself, as there were times when Sean could not discern himself from Artemis. This, combined with a family history of schizophrenia on the Malloy side of the family, suggested that Sean might unknowingly hurt himself while lost in his delusions.
With two other children to take care of, Sean’s grandparents felt they would not be able to properly look after Sean. He was admitted to Landel’s by Bellman.

Current Status: For the first few days of his stay, Sean was very uncooperative and routinely required sedation or punishment. However, after his routine therapy sessions with Dr. Disraeli and his sleep-therapy, he seems much more subdued and receptive to ‘Artemis’ as an illness instead of a person. He is still lacking in motivation to do certain tasks, but seems keen on reading and talking at the very least.

Working Diagnosis: Undifferentiated schizophrenia/dissociative disorder.

They’d taken him.

Haku had always known, in some small part of his subconscious, that one of these days the orderlies would intrude on their private retreat. They had clung to one another, afraid that the other would be taken from him and harmed. And while Haku bristled like a cornered animal, Artemis could only shiver in terror and do his best to look intimidating. When they separated him from Haku forcefully, the boy started screaming bloody murder and thrashing. This was a night where those who were taken were brainwashed and forced to fight.

The ninja had thrown himself at the orderlies, but didn’t do anything that would have gotten him sedated or worse—restrained. He had to be able to move tonight… if he was going to save Artemis from himself. So, as much as it pained him to hear Artemis scream as he was dragged down the hallway, begging for someone to help him, Haku stood in the middle of the room, clutching Artemis’ still-warm blanket until his knuckles turned white.

He couldn’t do anything. He was bound by Zabuza’s will, being his tool, and there was no way that he was going to be allowed to chase after the roommate he was ‘flirting unnecessarily’ with.

But Artemis was his friend—his best friend. They shared everything, stood by each other, cried on each other’s shoulders. Not trying to rescue Artemis would be like leaving him. Abandoning him for lost.

As he prepared for the night, Haku couldn’t help but wonder if this was going to affect his performance. He had been trained to push everything else away to focus on the mission, but every time he tried to forget about Artemis’ terrified and pleading expression, the screams reverberated in his head. And when he tried to forget those, he could almost feel where Artemis had clung to him. It was driving him crazy.

“Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,” The head doctor crowed after his perfunctory end of the day polite spiel, “I’ve prepared quite a treat for you. Something out of fairy tales, yes. One has taken his Vorpal Sword in hand, but I don’t believe he’s looking for a Jabberwock. Two and Three are quite poetic as well: the boy who was abandoned by his parents and left to study magic, and the boy who abandoned his own parents and stole his ability. Let’s hope you don’t run into either, because they both have been feeling a bit frustrated with their peers as of late. We wouldn’t want anyone to harbor a grudge, now would we?” Landel’s dark chuckle reverberated over the speaker and all was silent. Haku stood in the middle of his room, waiting.

True to form, Zabuza came in without knocking a few minutes later. He looked around, trying to find the scrawny boy so he could ask if Haku had eaten enough. Haku merely stood in the middle of the room, bowing low.

“Where is he?” The older ninja opened the closet and looked inside. Nothing.

“If you mean my roommate, Zabuza-san, he was taken this evening,” It hurt to sound like he didn’t care one way or another. His master grunted and shut the closet door.

“Tough luck,” He looked at Haku out of the corner of his eye. Zabuza had been with Haku for years—he knew when something was troubling the boy. “Boy.”

“Yes, Zabuza-san?”

“You like that brat, don’t you?”

Haku wasn’t sure how to answer this. Lying might have been a good idea to preserve his and Artemis’ secrecy, but if Zabuza knew he was lying he would only become angry. In this case, honesty would be the best idea.

“Artemis and I are friends, yes,” Haku replied. He didn’t say anything more. Zabuza grunted again and scowled at the opposing wall.

“I’ve already told you you’re free to do as you please. If you want to go after him, go ahead.”

“I cannot do that, not when Zabuza-san needs me,” Haku replied immediately. He cared about Artemis, but his attachment to Zabuza was still an intrinsic part of who he was. He wouldn’t leave his master alone during the night.

“Fine, let’s go then,” His master turned to leave the room.

“Wait…!” Haku stopped, surprised when he realized that the exclamation had come out of his own mouth. Zabuza turned and stared at Haku, slightly annoyed at the whole situation. Why couldn’t Haku just make up his mind? This could go on for days if he didn’t do something.

“This is so…!” Zabuza ruffled his hair, aggravated. “Okay look, I’ve got a bone to pick with the kid, so let’s just find the brat. Before I waste any more time.”

Haku nodded and bowed deeply, “Thank you, Zabuza-san…”

“Let’s go. Any idea where he is?”

Haku thought for a moment, “He mentioned heading to the basement with Abarai Renji and Hitsugaya Toshirou.”

“And how does he feel about them?”

“They are his friends,” Haku said. He thought back, “But he did say that he was frustrated with his assignments. Apparently he was treated like a packhorse last night.”

“Then he’s bound to hold a grudge,” Zabuza said. “He’ll want to prove himself tonight, damn smartass.”

Minutes later, Haku and Zabuza had walked through the strangely deserted Sun Room and into the Cafeteria. Both of them, being ninjas, knew that something was in the room. Whether or not it was Artemis was yet to be seen.

“Oi, what th’hell are you doin’ here?” Zabuza and Haku instantly drew their weapons and prepared for a fight. They straightened when Renji came out of the darkness, shouldering his sword.

“We’re here for the brat,” Zabuza responded, Haku remaining silent as usual. “You find him?”

Renji shrugged. “Why should I fucking tell you?”

“Because if you don’t, I’ll have to force it out of you,” Zabuza threatened. Of course, in reality, he wasn’t going to let anyone deny Haku anything—even his stupid roommate.

“Abarai-fukutaichou,” Hitsugaya’s cold voice came out of the darkness on Haku and Zabuza’s other side. “Silence. There is no need to aggravate other patients.” The small but wizened captain turned to Zabuza and Haku and nodded. “We have the situation under control. Please return to your rooms.”

“What was that?” Zabuza scowled. “Didn’t you hear me? We’re here for the brat and we’re not leaving without him.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Hitsugaya said coldly, drawing his sword. Renji followed suit.

“What the hell…?” Zabuza growled, reverting back into his battle-ready stance. Haku drew his senbon needles, expression calm and collected. Two targets in one area? Unheard of!

“Stand down,” A young voice commanded. Renji and Hitsugaya both dropped their stances and stared blankly at Zabuza and Haku. The two ninjas looked slightly surprised that both attackers had stopped so suddenly.

Haku hadn’t heard much about Artemis’ abilities, so he wasn’t sure how this had happened. All he knew was that the voice was definitely Artemis’, and it was commanding both Hitsugaya and Renji. The boy slowly stepped out of the shadows, a dark red stain on his front. Blood. He’d been injured. However, his face didn’t display any signs of pain or dismay. The boy looked… pleased, even.

“Good evening Haku. Momochi-san,” He smiled politely. “As you may have noticed, I have been set on my fellow patient tonight. So I am encouraging you as firmly as is possible to return to your rooms before I send you there myself.”

“Tch, bullshit,” Zabuza spat. “Whatever trick you’re playing here, it won’t work on us. You’ll be dead before you convince me to dance to your tune.”

“Really?” Artemis chuckled slightly. “My, my Momochi-san, I don’t see Haku anywhere… Where is he? Did you lose him?”

“What are you, senile? He’s right—” Zabuza looked to his right. Haku was gone. The older ninja went from zero to critical in under a second. “WHAT DID YOU DO WITH HIM?”

“I sent him back to his room. Well, our room,” Artemis said with a smile. “Along with your weapons.”

Zabuza could have sworn his sword was on his back a second ago, and now it was gone—along with the rest of his arsenal. He was suddenly overcome by the severity of the situation.

“Just go back to your room, Momochi-san,” Artemis said in a soothing tone. “Wait for Haku to come to you. Like always. You don’t want to hurt me—just go back to your room and wait for Haku. He’ll be so hurt if he realizes you left without him.”

He was right… Artemis was so right. He had to go back to his room and wait for Haku! Without another word, Zabuza turned around and ran for the doors. A small smirk curled up his lips.

“Zabuza-san!” Haku shouted, turning to run after his master. What was going on? He’d been shouting at Zabuza the whole time, and his master had acted as though he hadn’t heard him. What had Artemis done to his master to make Haku invisible to him?

“Haku, the doors are locked,” Artemis shouted. Haku’s hands reached for the doors, but they were suddenly far too heavy for him to open. As hard as he pulled, he wasn’t able to get out of the room and follow his master. When he was certain that was no longer an option, Haku charged Hitsugaya and pulled a senbon needle on the captain before Artemis could blink.

“I know you respect him, Artemis. Don’t make me kill him. Let me out of this room.”

“Haku, just listen to me,” Artemis implored the younger ninja. “You can get hurt out there—why don’t you just stay here with me?”

Haku’s grip on the needle softened. Yes… staying with Artemis did sound like a good idea. Artemis would protect him, and make sure nothing hurt him tonight…

Zabuza-san.

Haku tightened his grip on the needle again, pushing back the thoughts of a wonderful, safe night spent at Artemis’ side. Zabuza needed him, and he wasn’t about to abandon his master. The younger ninja frowned at his roommate, “I’m serious, Artemis. Let me out before I hurt him or you.”

“You wouldn’t hurt me, would you Haku?” Artemis said, looking slightly upset.

No, you wouldn’t hurt him. You can’t hurt him…

“Let go of the Captain and come here. I won’t hurt you, I just want to hold you again. Please?”

No, of course he won’t hurt me. This is ridiculous, I should just let go of Hitsugaya—

“It’s your words,” Haku said, fighting against the urge to let go of Hitsugaya and walk over to Artemis. “Your words are laced with magic—they’re making me want to do the things you want me to do.”

Artemis looked surprised, but his expression slowly curled back into a pleased smirk. “Impressive. The Captain and Renji didn’t get that far—they even walked right up to me and let me launch a full wave of mesmer at them. Now, as you can see, they’re behaving themselves quite nicely.”

“And so you’re throwing a tantrum because you’re upset about being pushed aside?” Haku asked, smiling. Artemis’ face darkened.

“This is no tantrum, this is a demonstration. Both Hitsugaya and Renji always have pushed me into whatever little chore they can find, just so that I’m out of their hair. Nevermind the fact I could run intellectual circles around both of them until they were dumbstruck and dizzy,” Artemis spat. “And now, I’m the one giving the orders. And in the morning, they’ll remember what happened, and they’ll watch how they treat me next time.”

Haku took the chance he had been waiting for. The effects of the mesmer worn off, he threw one of his senbon needles straight at his friend. His aim was true—it lodged in Artemis’ neck and stilled his voicebox.

The boy started making surprised choking noises, obviously shocked that Haku had actually attacked him. He backed up into the wall and raised a hand to remove the needle. The young ninja charged in, faster than Artemis could follow, and pinned Artemis’ hand to the wall.

“Don’t move it, or you’ll hurt yourself,” Haku warned gently. He drove another needle into Artemis’ arm, wincing as his friend spasmed in pain unable to scream. He took another needle in hand and Artemis began thrashing and clawing at Haku.

“Hold still, please!” Haku begged, feeling rogue tears building at the back of his eyes. He slid another needle into where Artemis’ neck met his shoulder, and the right side of the boy’s body fell slack. The genius was starting to realize that if he didn’t do something he was going to be defeated without much of a fight. But without his voice to command Renji and Hitsugaya to attack, he was a sitting duck.

Another needle in the other side of his neck rendered him to the floor, and he lay there panting in extreme pain and loathing. Haku stood over him, feeling one of the tears slip over his eyelashes and trail down his face.

“I’m so sorry…” Haku leaned over Artemis and kissed him gently as he slid the last two needles into the boy’s neck. His head dropped back and Artemis lay still on the floor as if dead.

Behind Haku, Renji and Hitsugaya gasped and fell forward to their hands and knees, as though they had run several miles without stopping. Haku took this to mean that Artemis’ magic only worked as long as he was still conscious. Renji and Hitsugaya took it to mean something completely different, however.

“Fowl!”

“What the FUCK did you do to him?!” Renji shouted, pulling Haku away from Artemis by his shirt collar. The redhead leaned over Artemis, assessing the boy’s wounds. He didn’t like what he found. “Shit…!”

“You’ve killed one of my men…” Hitsugaya’s eyes were murderous and cold. Through his own fault and moment of weakness, Artemis had ensnared his mind—and now he was dead. The captain was livid. He lifted his sword. “No one preys on my team… no one.”

“He’s still alive, idiot.” Haku’s downturned face lifted at the recognition of his master’s voice. He turned around, relieved to find Zabuza approaching the group. “He just blocked the brat’s pressure points. He’ll wake up soon enough, so I suggest you get him somewhere where he won’t be attacked and you can keep him in check.” Zabuza looked down at Haku, frowning slightly at the tear trail he saw on the boy’s face. He sighed internally. What a waste of a night…

“Let’s move him,” Zabuza grunted, turning to leave. Haku blinked, confused as to why his master would care about moving Artemis with two people he didn’t know. But he let it rest for now. His master had been doing strange things lately—perhaps this was what people called ‘change’.

Renji carried Artemis back to M47, along with Zabuza, Haku, and Hitsugaya. True to Zabuza’s word, Hitsugaya noticed that Artemis was breathing when they entered the room block. Hesitantly, Hitsugaya and Renji agreed that removing the needles could prove dangerous for Artemis’ health, and for everyone in the room should he wake up. That settled, Renji and Hitsugaya agreed that an empty path to the basement was not an opportunity they could pass up.

“When he wakes up,” Hitsugaya said, pausing at the door. “Tell him he has tomorrow night off.”

Haku didn’t get a chance to speak with Artemis that day. The boy had remained curled up under his covers shaking and crying despite the urges of his nurse to go out and have breakfast. Haku couldn’t help but believe that he was responsible.

He returned to the room that night to find Artemis still under his covers. He twitched under the blanket when the door shut, leaving them both alone.

“Artemis?” Haku called softly, trying to catch a glimpse of his friend. His head remained firmly under the blanket, though. The ninja sighed lightly and sat down on the bed. “May I sit here?”

No response.

“May I lie down with you? And hold you?” There was a pause, then a small sob came from under the blankets. Haku quietly pulled them aside and slipped into bed with Artemis. He wrapped his cool arms around Artemis’ hot and sweaty torso and gently melded himself against his friend’s back. He stayed there for a moment, but there was no reaction. This was torture. Haku didn’t know how much more he could stand of Artemis’ silence, so he asked the one question he’d had on his mind all day. He leaned in to Artemis’ ear.

“Did I scare you?”

He nodded. Haku tightened his embrace.

“I’m sorry…”

Indeed, I hope that certain old comrades come to pay me a visit while I spend my time strolling, though don't you pathetic fools take that as an invitation to harass me with your useless attacks. I am invulnerable and I have little patience for games that I don't set the rules of. You really should head down, fellows. Down, down, into the ground, where the answers to riddles await you. Down, down, down. A door in the kitchen.

Radio

Apologies for the poor sound, my friends. We seem to be experiencing some technical difficulties. But that won't stop me. The night is still young, there is fun to be had. If you stay out of the hot spots, that is. There's a bad moon on the rise, cats and kitties, a sanguine moon that holds no delight for creatures of the light. When the moon is high.... well, let's just say you're better off indoors. There's no telling what's in store when the stars go out. But you'll do what you want, won't you? There are no gifts for you tonight. But sit tight - there's bigger toy boxes out there. If you dare to open them. And remember, old friends and new friends alike, good things come to those who wait.

Head Doctor

Welcome, welcome, everyone, to a show that will excite all watchers and frustrate all contributors! For this is Landel's of the Damned, and those who don't survive the slaughter are those whose incompetence earns them no pity. We wonder, dear friends, which of our stellar students will take down the biggest scores? Yes, for near the halls of medical knowledge, we have a man whose background is as varied in bloodshed as it is with flora and fauna. In the field, we have a female as seemingly pretty as a flower, though beware the well-learned attacks she might bring down upon you. In the Sun Room is perhaps our most experienced student in the betrayal of his peers for a higher cause, and of course, don't forget our teachers that tend to show up every night. And of course, underground, you'll find a whole new playground with which you can hide from those better students. See if you can prove yourselves worthy of the end, though, and then you might meet your maker.

Radio

Welcome, welcome all my little cats and canaries. It's time again for Jack's nightly show, listen up and listen up good. The piper is leading you to your dooms. The tombs are no place for you, not now. Would you scale Olympus with a single rope? Would you challenge Zeus with a pocket knife? Storm the gates of Hades with an air rifle? If you value your life, my fair-weather friends, you will gather your strength before descending into hell. The boy scouts had it right: always be prepared. Let me help prepare you. I offer you what aide I can. No one found that fire-spitting demon of death I left last night. Such a pity, you were so close. I've moved it, you know. It's gone where it's cold, where it's fires are dormant. The demon of hard fire sleeps in the snow. It's children sleep with it. For those of you with poor memories who need to see what's before you, I offer you this: A polar box, equipped in full, to help you remember those tricky little visions. Look for it among the stacks. And now a simple reward, one I know so many of you crave. I, too long for that sweet inhalation, that orgasmic exhalation.... Oh how delicious it is. What is a man without his vice? But such a pity. They really shouldn't be kept where they could get so wet. Better hurry, if you want them. I am tired of warning you. You do as you will, you run willy-nilly across the lands of the damned, never watching where you step. You will fall if you don't rein in, and if you fall here, you never get up. Take my gifts and use them well. You'll need them, if you head down to hell. Peace out my friends, I have much to do this night. I'll be in touch. See you on the flip side. Jack out.

My my, what a busy night it is. I have to say my friends, seeing you bleed and fall is bringing me down. I think some of you may need to cool it, hit the breaks, or else you’ll take the bad way out of here. Bodybags don’t suit anyone. I fear that the big bad doctor is getting smarter. He sets his guards well, I can tell you’re frustrated. Hang tight, my friends. You’re getting in there but it isn’t enough. Remember some monsters are just too tough. There’s no shame in shortcuts now and then. But take too many The silent puppet master behind his intercom would know all about that - he's a quiet salt tonight, isn't he? Always taking the easy route, always so careful, always so slick. Never risking his own neck. Too many shortcuts makes a man forget the true worth of his own skin. Let me tell you something, my friends. Your skin is only worth what you’re willing to risk for it. But don’t start being reckless. I know you're desperate but you need to cool it. Stay smart. And take heart, friends, I am here to give you aide, as always. I’m one hep cat, remember. I see your pain and I hear your pleas and I reach out to you. If you cats and kitties want a little something that can fit in your kick and add some burn to your punch, make your way to the rooms where the women come and go. If you hurry, you may score yourself a freeby. And if you want to leave me a request well knock me a note. But keep it cool and don’t sign your name. You don’t want to meet the same fate as my comrades. Jack out.

Doyleton. It's a place nearby, and you might be seeing it soon, though I'm not sure if you want to. A field trip, you could call it, to one of the last heavens left on this Earth, as artificial as it might be. Yes, this Earth, not your Gaia, Expel, Ivalice, Auldrant, Radiant Garden, or--God, whatever the hell else you people call your ridiculous playtime lands. In any case, this is all you know now, and this is all you will know, and perhaps, in a month or so, it will be all that you have known. Our first group of patients to be introduced tonight seems to have finally arrived. We'll see what they think of your personal hell. Who knows? Maybe they'll try to exploit you for information under the guise of making friends. But no matter. This will all be over, someday. (Head Doctor)

Well well well, my friends. It seems as though you don’t truly heed my advice. I warned you. Connections to me are a bad, bad thing. If you don’t want to disappear, you won’t make it known you know me! If you say you listen, then listen! Hear me: he seeks to take all that I hold dear. He has taken from me already, he will take again! He will take you! If you don’t take the warning, I won’t mourn you. The floodgates are opening. Can you feel it? The dam is opening and the waves will rush through and I wonder how long before the lake is full. Will it ever fill? Time will tell. But come on now - yak yak yak. All he ever does is flap his trap. And nothing useful ever comes out. He’s talking nonsense my friends. But that’s nothing new. Last paradise? He knows nothing. He is a man who cannot comprehend what paradise is. But I do. I could tell you all about paradise, if you had the time and I had the inclination. I assure you my explanation would blow your mind. Now I know you’re all on your toes, nerves on end, cabin fever closing in. But relax, my friends, relax. I’ve got some toys to make your stay a little easier. Do you want them? You’ll have to work for them. Nothing good ever comes free, there are no silver platters here. For those of you who like it hot, I have something special for you. You’ll find it close by to where Adam sleeps. Just look for the third ball and cock, if you can stomach it. I hear the water at night's something foul. But I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. And get your minds out of the gutter, I can hear you snickering from here. If it’s cutlery you’re after, the kitchen is dry. Lo, the sweet sound of blades! Was there ever a more satisfying sound than the singing of swords? You tell me. And that thing so many of you desire, that killer of men, that demon, that creature of hot death…. Do you want it? How bad? Bad enough to bleed. If you’re willing, then seek out where the dead wait. You’ll find your heart’s want there. But don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched. And you’ll need to find your eggs for full functionality. I told you it wouldn’t be easy. And a word of advice to my chatty friends - I hope you don’t think you’re actually fooling anyone. Sometimes I feel like I’m shouting to the deaf. Are you really all so blind and dumb? All the pieces of the puzzle are there! Put them together! Combine the notes, form the song, it shouldn’t take you this long! I know you all are bright, or you wouldn’t have lasted more than a night. Don’t think only of surviving! I will tell you this: escape is a dream beyond your reach right now. You aren’t strong enough, you aren’t desperate enough, you do not have the means. Rome wasn’t built in a day, no war was won in a week, seek the tools and knowledge. You seek to treat symptoms when it is the disease you need to combat. And the disease is Martin Landel. He holds the key. He is the father of lies, the master of shadows, the puppeteer, seer of delusions, caster of illusions he is the sum of all fears. Excuse me, all you fine cats and kitties. I've had a few nips tonight and my mouth ran away from me. Unprofessional, I know, but I'm only a man. And speaking of men, the bid bad doctor man is scary, I give you that. He has thrall, he has gall, he can hold you in his grip. Oh, but he has his weaknesses. And he, like all men who grip their power like babes grip blankets, came from nothing. Remember that, cats and kitties, his beginnings are humble. His beginnings are pathetic. His rhetoric wears thin. His masks fall away. His power is the power of a charlatan and nothing more. And he still can’t find me. He never will. Not until I strangle the life from him. Remember this, my caged songbirds, he belongs to me. Stay alive another night, keep fighting the good fight. I’m with you all the way. Peace out. (Radio/Alec Doyle)

Do you really believe you scare me, Alec? Do you? You always were the weaker of the two of us! Weak in body, weak in mind, weak in conviction and confidence. And now you blame me for your mistakes. Silly, stupid doctor... Always thinking you have power and morality that doesn't exist in this world, not after all we've seen. He paused, flipping through papers as he normally did during the day. Oh my, is it time to call out the new patients already? Well, then, come forth! Group 2 is now a part of our wonderful Landel's purgatory--and I do say purgatory because I am stuck here too, stuck to deal with you ingrates day after day, night after night. When do I sleep? Who the hell knows. In any case, Alec, I'm amazed at your hypocrisy. Me? A charlatan? This coming from the self-proclaimed savior who spews no more than riddles as easily and happily as our friend downstairs. Oh, my, did I just give some cryptic clue whose origin is as hard to decipher as the words themselves? I thought that was your job. In any case, I'm done putting up with your goading tonight. Try me when I'm in a worse mood, Doyle. Then maybe you'll get a rise out of the monster you freely insult but have no courage to face. (Head Doctor)

One down, two to go. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Two lovely ladies are making music with the monsters as we speak. Good luck, ladies, I hope you win your trinket. But oh, I do like to see you get ahead. You’ve never bled for nothing, I promise you that. Just ignore that square cat on the intercom. He’s not worth our time. But man, is he funny. I can’t take my own advice. Oh, Martin, Martin, Martin. Your ego is showing, and it is big. You accuse me of fear. I will admit it: I am afraid. I fear you like any sane man would fear a rabid dog or a schizophrenic sasquatch. You are unstable, irrational, frenzied and mad. I would be a stupid man indeed not to have some fear. But you mistake healthy wary for cowardice. A coward, ha! I braved your labyrinth, your hellish maze, I wandered these halls weaponless and at the mercy of your staff - and prisoners. The things I did in these halls…. But you know all about that, don’t you? You found out, I know you did, and you struck at me. And I will never forgive you. You make me sick, Martin Landel! I remember when you were sane. I remember when you had some vestiges of humanity, of morality, of reality. They’re all gone now. Madder than a mad cow and twice as rotten, that’s you, Martin. Do your superiors know? Oh! Whoops! Did I let a cat out of the bag there? That’s right my listening friends, your big bad bogey man is not the biggest or the baddest. He’s just a little doctor with delusions of grandeur, middle management with a god complex, a cog in the wheel. Don’t let him fool you into thinking he’s anything important. You are a mad dog, Martin, being used. And one way or another, you will be put down. No one’s visited the dead yet. I guess you don’t want the prize. What a shame, I put so much thought into it. (Radio/Alec Doyle)

Schizophrenic sasquatch? Sasquatch? Surely, you can come up with something better than that, old friend! You, weaponless? Ha! You reaped the same benefits from these patients as I did, Alec! You remember, I'm sure, the poor man from whom you stole your own abilities? Of course, I have more than that now--much more--more power than even you can imagine, than even my so-called superiors can. I'm the one being ordered, here? Ha! I have countries begging for the fruits of my research; it is only through my own pitying patriotism that I stick with this sad bunch of short-sighted military men! In short, dear doctor, your words are noble indeed, but your intentions are another matter entirely, as I have reiterated again and again and again. And again, this trade of tirades--I tire of it! Good night for now, Alec, and Group 3, I hope you enjoy your stay. (Head Doctor)

Perhaps I'm overestimating you, Radio Man. Perhaps I'm putting too much stock in how much sway you have over the patients, in how much you can truly help them. Why, yes, even I am capable of admitting my errors, as few and far between as they may be! But enough of that wretched man, dear patients. I believe it's time to announce something grand, something new about this Institute. Oh, yes, we're always coming up with new surprises for all of you, as undeserving and selfish as you all may be, but luckily for us, the new secrets of this building may only be opened by those of supreme wit and physical prowess. Allow me to give you a hint, in fact, much like the savior you all put so much stock in: Down is the way you want to go if you want to uncover the secrets of this place, ladies and gentlemen, though uncovering the keys to knowledge will be far more difficult than any of you can imagine. Not that I imagine many of you will succeed in the tasks ahead of you, though perhaps the newly-arrived members of Group 4 will be able to assist all of you in your future endeavors. Good luck to you all, though I doubt you'll make much use of it. (Head Doctor)

My poor little friends. Haven't you learned? Don't you listen? I give you everything you need, but you fail to heed. You always fail to heed. Don't you remember what I told you the other night? If you don't listen, you'll bleed and die and you'll never find your friends. The end will come, and you will wonder "what could I have done different?" Listen to me! For the love of whatever gods you believe in, listen! Sometimes I wonder why I bother. Ignore the big bad boogy man. You aren't ready for what he's luring you to. Not by a long shot. You can't even kill creatures I told you how to kill! And you think you can escape? You're like children, running around and thinking you can do everything yourself - you need help! Children fall when they don't hold their parent's hand - you will die. And I will not hold your hands every step of the way, but I will guide you. I want to see you out, I want to see you home. I want to see you break this place in two, but I'm beginning to doubt you can do it. Prove me wrong, my cats and kittens. Prove to me my faith in you should stay strong. I can't stay any longer. I've said my piece, I leave you to it. Don't let me down. (Radio/Alec Doyle)

[The writing is messy, but still legible, as though it was written in a hurry.]

You know what? I'm too goddamn tired for this. No one listens, anyway. (Head Doctor)

No tips or hints tonight my friends. But I have a message for Big Bad Doctor Man. This game is old and tired, Martin. You want to destroy me? You want to break me? Then be a man - come for me! Stop hiding behind easy targets, Martin. You are a coward! You are a pathetic, frightened little man who refuses to fight his own battles! You make me sick! I've had enough. No more history repeating itself, no more lashing out at me with cheap tricks and gutless blows. You disgust me. Terrorists go after the innocent to hit their targets, Martin. So I say again-- if you want me, come and find me. Or I will come for you. One way or another, you false god, I will see you dead. You will pay for your crimes and I will be your judge, jury and executioner. I'm afraid it may be some time before I walk among you again, my friends. It isn't safe for you. Watch your back, watch the backs of those you love. The stakes are getting higher. Jack out. (Radio/Alec Doyle)

Oh, dear, and you call me a liar! Of course, I have no time for petty games at the moment. No, no, right now, I'm at the end of another long night and yet again I've been too busy looking after your collective behinds to give you new games to play with. You'll just have to deal with the same old toys for now. Aheh, not that you all care. I'm sure all of you are completely oblivious to just how amusing this place can really be. But no matter. Daylight is upon all of you, isn't it? I'm sure most of you are either being quick about using your last minute of 'freedom' for all it's worth or simply slumping in a bed, bleeding after being injured by all my little pets. Years of research, this place took, I'll have you know. I'm sure Alec could tell you all about that, of course. I suppose that's all you ingrates can comprehend for the moment. And so the cycle continues. (Head Doctor)

[Written on a smaller square of paper, tucked into the back of Artemis' second journal.]

Haku--

If you've found this page in my journal, it means I've been taken for experimentation. I don't ask for a rescue party, all I request is that this page be affixed to our door.

Consider the following information concerning myself as payment.

--A.F. II

[Written on the final page of Artemis' second journal.]

ATTENTION FELLOW PATIENTS

This night, I, Artemis Fowl the Second, was taken from my room by the staff of this so-called Institute. For what purpose, I know not.

That being said, I wish to make your (and my) lives easier by releasing certain details which will be helpful to both of us. Please understand that I hold you as much responsible for my rescue, as I hold myself responsible for what might happen to my unfortunate victims (see: not at all). Read this, don't read this, come find me or don't. It doesn't matter to me. But before you turn away and go about your business--you should know that helping me in my hour of need will earn you rewards.

Read on, and you shall learn.

HOW TO DEFEAT ARTEMIS FOWL

-First of all, my magic is extremely limited. The amount I have in reserve grows smaller and smaller with each injury I sustain.

-I don't believe that any brainwashing technique could improve my magical ability, but in my current state, it is impossible for me to mesmerize (force a target to do my bidding) anyone.

-Should I be able to to mesmerize another patient, they will not come to their senses very easily. It is possible, but I will undoubtedly make it difficult. The best way to end the spell is to either knock me unconscious or <del>kil</del> defeat me. Draining my magic will also weaken the spell, but as I've said before, I'm not sure how much I possess. That route could take a while.

-If an injury is serious enough, it will take all of my magic just to keep me alive. This is a good way to disable my only weapon.

-However, IF I AM GIVEN A WEAPON OF ANY KIND, I will use my left hand. Please do not feel intimidated by this--I am a poor swordsman, and an even poorer shot.

-If I'm somehow disabled and still alive, could someone take whatever items I'm wearing? I've heard we get our clothes back, and I miss my suit terribly.

-And the reward: besides keeping all your limbs, I might have a ring on. It looks like a normal ring, but it can be used as a phone. This, plus any items I may be carrying, are yours. I will not contest ownership.

IF I AM NOT BRAINWASHED, BUT TAKEN FOR EXPERIMENTATION

<del>There are pill bottles full of golden monster blood in my dresser. The blood has healing properties. Take these bottles in exchange for contacting any of the following people:</del>

You are welcome to anything in my room in exchange for contacting any of the following people:

Obi-Wan Kenobi - Room M43
Qui-Gon Jinn
Abarai Renji - Room M42
Sora
Edward - Room M28
Rena
Naminé - Room F7
Hitsugaya Toshiro - Room M23
Farfarello - Room M40
Schuldig
Matsumoto Rangiku
Harry Potter

If <del>the blood</del> whatever you find is not enough, I can promise more rewards once I am in my right mind/safe.

I thank you, associates, friends, enemies, and fellow patients alike, for reading this.

--Artemis Fowl II
